March 1, 1949- Joe Louis retired as heavyweight boxing after holding the title for a record eleven years and eight months.

March 3, 1990-Carole Gist crowned first black Miss USA.

March 7, 1942-First cadets graduated from flying school at Tuskegee.

March 16, 1846-Rebecca J. Cole, 2nd Black Female Physician. Cole was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 16, 1846.

March 18, 1933- Unita Blackwell was born this day in Lula, Mississippi. She became the first black woman mayor elected in Mississippi.

March 23, 2007- Barrington Irving is the first African American to fly solo around the world and, as of 2010, the youngest person to complete the feat.

March 26, 1937-William H. Hastie confirmed as judge of Federal District Court in Virgin Islands and became the first Black federal judge.
