July 3, 1983- Calvin Smith of US becomes the fastest man alive (36.25 kph for 100m).
July 6, 1957- The first Black woman tennis champion, Althea Gibson,wins the women's Wimbledon singles championship.
July 11, 1925-Dr. Blanche Sellers Lavizzo was born and was the first African American woman pediatrician in the state of Washington. She arrived in Seattle in 1956, with her husband Dr. Philip Lavizzo, a general surgeon.
July 16, 1991- In Paris, jazz trumpeter Miles Davis was named a Knight in the (French) Legion of Honor, one of that nation's highest cultural honors.
