Do you know what happened in Black History during the month of January?

  • January 1, 1997- Kofi Annan of Ghana becomes first black secretary of United Nations.

  • January 6, 1820- The first organized emigration to Africa begins when 86 free African Americans leave New York Harbor aboard the Mayflower of Liberia. They are bound for the British colony of Sierra Leone, which welcomes free African Americans and fugitive slaves.

  • January 16, 1920- Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the Campus of Howard University. The sorority celebrates 100 years.

  • January 20 ,1986- On January 20, 1986, Ronald McNair (1950-86) was the first black astronaut killed during a space mission, when the space shuttle "Challenger" met with disaster.

  • January 30, 1797- Sojourner Truth was born a slave in Hurley, New York.
